How to Write a Product Description

Step 1: Start with a Hook

Grab attention in the first sentence. Think: What makes your item special or different?

Example:
“Handcrafted with love, this burp cloth brings comfort, charm, and a touch of ocean magic to every cuddle.”

Step 2: Describe the Item Clearly

Use simple language to describe:

  • What the item is

  • Materials used

  • Size/shape

  • Special features (e.g. reversible, hand-stitched, soft backing, etc.)

Example:
This generously sized burp cloth is made with soft cotton towelling on the back and a sweet dolphin design on the front. It’s gentle on baby’s skin and durable enough for everyday use.

Step 3: Tell the Story

Let people feel something—tell them about the inspiration or how it was made.

Example:
Each piece is hand-sewn by a passionate crafter, inspired by her love for the ocean and the joy of simple, thoughtful gifts.

Step 4: Add Benefits

Focus on how this item helps the customer. What problem does it solve or joy does it bring?

Example:
No more scratchy bibs or messy mealtimes—this cloth is absorbent, washable, and doubles as a cute nursery accessory.

Step 5: Mention Who It’s For

Help customers imagine using or gifting the item.

Example:
Perfect for new parents, baby showers, or just adding handmade magic to your little one’s essentials.

Step 6: Add Care Instructions (if needed)

Let them know how to look after the item.

Example:
Machine wash cold. Tumble dry low or hang to dry.

Step 7: End with Emotion or Call to Action

Close strong with something warm, poetic, or promotional.

Example:
Add a touch of handmade love to your baby’s day—or gift someone a beautiful memory.

🌟 How to Use ChatGPT to Write Product Descriptions (Even if You’re Not a Writer)

Hi beautiful vendors, it’s Cailin here!
We know writing descriptions isn’t everyone’s favourite part—but it can be quick, easy, and even fun with a little help from ChatGPT.

Here’s a simple, step-by-step tutorial you can follow. You don’t need to be techy—just open the site, type what you need, and let the magic happen.

🛠 What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is like your friendly virtual assistant who loves words. You tell it what you need, and it gives you writing ideas, full descriptions, titles, tags—you name it.

🧵 Step-by-Step: Use ChatGPT to Write a Product Description

1. Go to https://chat.openai.com (you can create a free account if you don’t have one)

2. Type in your prompt

Try this example:

“Write a short, warm and handmade-style product description for a burp cloth made with soft towelling on one side and a dolphin pattern on the front. Mention that it’s great for baby showers and gentle on baby skin.”

3. Hit Enter

ChatGPT will give you a full paragraph or two! You can copy, tweak, or ask it:

“Make it more playful.”
“Add care instructions.”
“Make it sound more earthy or poetic.”
“Give me 3 SEO-friendly titles for this product.”

4. Tweak for your tone (if you like)

Want to sound quirky? Calm? Empowering? Just tell ChatGPT:

“Rewrite this in a quirky and creative tone for a handmade marketplace.”

✨ BONUS Prompts You Can Use

Product Titles:

“Give me 5 handmade-style product titles for a crochet bunny rattle.”

Short Descriptions:

“Write a short, punchy product description (under 30 words) for a handmade burp cloth.”

SEO Help:

“List 5 SEO keywords I can use to help customers find a dolphin-patterned burp cloth.”

Social Captions:

“Write an Instagram post to promote my new handmade baby burp cloths.”

💬 Pro Tip: Be Specific

The more details you give, the better your results. Include things like:

  • What it’s made of

  • What makes it unique

  • Who it’s perfect for

  • Any story or meaning behind it

🧵 How to Use an Image to Help Write a Product Description in ChatGPT

✅ Step 1: Upload Your Image

Just click the 📎 or image icon (in ChatGPT) to upload a clear photo of your handmade product.

Tip: Try to use a bright, clear image showing the front and back if possible (especially for things like burp cloths or sewn items).

✍️ Step 2: Tell ChatGPT What You Need

Type this below your image:

“This is a handmade burp cloth. Can you write a warm, handmade-style product description for this? Mention the towelling back, dolphin design, and that it’s great for baby showers or gentle baby gifts.”

You can also ask:

  • “Give me a short and long version.”

  • “Add a bit of poetic flair or emotional connection.”

  • “Make it sound perfect for a mum-to-be.”

💡 Step 3: Copy, Edit & Paste to Your Store

Once ChatGPT gives you the description, feel free to:

  • Tweak it to sound more like you

  • Add care instructions

  • Use parts of it for your short description, title, and tags
