Moss & Velvet Studio
Handmade Ronghua in Sydney

This brooch is a handcrafted Ronghua piece – a traditional Chinese silk flower art with over 1,000 years of history. Each petal and leaf is individually shaped from high-quality silk thread (not velvet), assembled with velvet cord, and set with hairspray – a modern adaptation that helps the flower hold its form while staying flexible.

The piece features one deep crimson rose with seven matching dark green leaves. The low-saturation dark red and deep green palette is perfect for gothic, dark academia, or alternative styles.Size: approximately 12 cm in length and 9 cm in width (rough estimate, as each piece is handmade and may vary slightly). All items are handmade, so slight variations, tiny glue traces, or subtle asymmetries may exist. These are not flaws but the signature of the maker’s hand.

Storytelling

A gothic rose that never wilts – handcrafted from silk and copper, for those who find beauty in the dark.

This brooch was inspired by the contrast between light and shadow in gothic architecture. I wanted to capture the feeling of a midnight garden – where dark red roses bloom against deep green leaves. Each petal is shaped by hand using a traditional Chinese technique called Ronghua, which dates back to the Tang Dynasty. I’ve added a modern touch with hairspray to help the silk hold its shape, while keeping the piece soft to the touch. Every flower takes several hours to complete, and each one carries a piece of history and a lot of patience.

  • Materials: Silk thread, velvet cord, copper wire, hairspray (for setting)
  • Time to make: 5-6hours, handmade
  • Gift note: A handcrafted bloom for a soul who dances with the dark. Wear it and remember – beauty is in the details.

Why it matters

This piece is more than just an accessory – it keeps a thousand-year-old craft alive. Ronghua is an endangered folk art, and every purchase supports a young maker who is dedicated to preserving and reimagining this tradition. It’s also a slow-fashion choice: made to last, not to be thrown away.

Care instructions

· Keep dry – avoid water and moisture.
· Gently dust with a soft brush or cloth.
· Store in a box away from direct sunlight to prevent fading.
· Do not crush or bend the petals – they are shaped to hold their form, but still delicate.
